Black Cap Rachin Ravindra surges into Google’s world top-10 trending athletes list

Overnight Black Caps sensation Rachin Ravindra has beaten out global sporting superstars such as Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Tyson Fury and Conor McGregor to make an appearance on a worldwide sporting power list.

Following his breakout batting performances at this year’s ICC men’s Cricket World Cup, Ravindra has made a shock emergence into the top 10 of Google’s Trending Athletes for 2023.

The lists are compiled based on search inquiries that saw high traffic spikes over a sustained period relative to the previous year, and with his incredible surge in the cricketing world, the 24-year-old made the list at No 8.

This time last year, he hadn’t even made his ODI debut for the Black Caps and was considered just an outside chance to even make New Zealand’s World Cup squad while playing in the Ford Trophy and Plunket Shield.

The fourth-highest run scorer at the World Cup, Ravindra burst onto the global cricketing stage by scoring 578 runs at an average of 64.22 with a strike rate of 106.44.

Only Virat Kohli (765), Rohit Sharma (597) and Quinton de Kock (594) scored more runs at this year’s tournament.

Rachin Ravindra has come in at No. 8 on the top 10 of Google's Trending Athletes for 2023.

Ravindra’s top score of 123 not out off 96 balls against England was the first of three centuries at the World Cup.

He only made his ODI debut on March 25 of this year, but it was the World Cup where he announced himself to the sporting world, up until the point where the eventual runnersup, India, knocked the Black Caps out in the semifinals.

Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin topped the list after he suffered a cardiac arrest during an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January.

Around four months later, Hamlin was cleared to return and has made a successful return to the NFL.

French footballer Kylian Mbappé trended as the second athlete on the list ahead of another NFL player, Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has a huge following for his on-field attributes and his and his brother’s podcast, New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, but the most likely reason for landing in the top three is because he’s Taylor Swift’s new boyfriend.

Steven Adams’ Memphis Grizzlies teammate Ja Morant comes in fourth on the back of a lengthy NBA suspension for, among other things, waving a gun around a nightclub. The incident appeared on an Instagram video.

England football captain Harry Kane rounded out the top five ahead of the most recognisable face in men’s tennis, Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz’s shock win over Djokovic in the Wimbledon final was enough to seal his spot on the list at No 7.

Another cricketer, India’s Shubman Gill, was in ninth position, with NBA star Kyrie Irving rounding out the top-10.

Woods, James, Ronaldo, Messi, Fury and McGregor all missed out on the top 10 list.

On a list where controversy and adversity can rate higher than success, there was no room for Lydia Ko, Israel Adesanya or All Blacks captain Sam Cane.
