WTTC today

The World Travel & Tourism Council of today is an organisation that has developed enormously since its inception, yet it still holds the same core values and purpose. The three main messages are in keeping with the vision of the CEOs who founded the Council in 1990:

  • Governments recognising Travel & Tourism as a top priority
  • Business balancing economics with people, culture and environment
  • A shared pursuit of long-term growth and prosperity

WTTC’s Members remain the driving force behind its activities and policies. Membership now includes the entire spectrum of the Travel & Tourism industry – from airlines and airports to hotels and hospitality groups, tour operators and retail travel agents, online distributors, cruise lines, investment companies, insurance groups, and the technology industry.

As a voluntary organisation, WTTC provides an important example of business leaders spending time and money to move their global activity forward while playing a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable development in our ever-changing world.

WTTC’s research, which quantifies the direct and total impact of Travel & Tourism on our economies in terms of GDP and employment growth, has helped to raise awareness of the economic contribution of our industry and continues to feature heavily in the media and in Governments.

For over 30 years, our work has been fundamental in creating change and raising the awareness of Travel & Tourism’s value, not just as one of the world’s largest economic sectors, but also to the many communities and travellers enriched through their experiences. Our goal is for the Travel & Tourism sector to be seamless, secure, safe, inclusive, and sustainable whilst working to a greater public/private sector collaboration.

Stretching 277 miles, the Grand Canyon is one of the most breathtaking sights in the United States. At a mile deep, this landmark has been carved out by the Colorado River over millions of years. Visitors tend to opt for one of two main places to visit the canyon: the South Rim or the North Rim. The South Rim, around 230 miles from Phoenix, is the most popular part and open year-round, though conditions can get hazardous in winter. The more isolated North Rim is closer if you’re coming from Utah, but it is generally harder to get to as well as closed between mid-October and mid-May.

Take in gorgeous vistas at viewpoints like Mather Point, and try and catch a sunrise somewhere along the canyon. Hiking down into the canyon is an option, too: Day trips are possible on trails like South Kaibab, or you can embark on an overnight rim-to-rim adventure. Be sure to bring proper supplies and gear, as you’ll be out in the wilderness.

We’re fortunate to live in an era where cell coverage reaches 95 percent of the population, according to the International Telecommunications Union. And that makes staying connected while traveling to most on-the-grid destinations a breeze. Many cell phone carriers offer some level of international data plans, which allows you to use your devices abroad — for a fee, of course.

But if you’re working on the go, traveling in a group, or attempting to preserve your phone’s battery, you might want to look into getting a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, which often provides more data to more devices. “Portable hotspots will use data just like cell phones do, and coverage will really depend on the carrier and the coverage they offer in the area,” Best Buy mobile supervisor Thomas Walker told Travel + Leisure. “Since hotspots require data, they also require a plan, something to remember as you consider buying a portable hotspot.”

Best Overall

Skyroam Solis Lite

Amazon

There are many things the Simo Solis Lite does well, but the real showstopper here is the company’s lifetime global data plan that gives you 1GB of data each month for as long as your device functions. And this plan truly is global, as the device works in 135+ different countries. That said, 1GB isn’t much data at all. Depending on your usage, you might need to upgrade to a more robust data package, which typically costs anywhere from $6 to $109, or potentially more, per month. On the plus side, you don’t need to change SIM cards in this hotspot — you can add those plans via an app.

As for the other stats with this device, the 16-hour battery life is well above average. We love that you can charge other devices with this hotspot — although that will reduce its battery life, of course. Up to 10 devices can be connected to the Solis Lite, which is likely suitable for most users, but it’s an unremarkable number compared to other products on the market. Similarly, 4G connectivity is serviceable but doesn’t earn any special accolades. If you’re traveling with a large group of people, you may want to consider other options depending on how connected you need to be.

One other standout feature of this Wi-Fi hotspot is true 24/7 customer support — this is especially valuable for travelers who need internet access at all hours across various time zones.

Best for SIM Cards

Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro

Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro

Netgear

If you need a fast and reliable internet connection just about anywhere, Netgear’s Nighthawk M6 Pro might be the solution. It’s compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the U.S., and it works in more than 125 countries when swapping in a new SIM card, supporting both 5G and Wi-Fi 6E. You can connect up to 32 devices simultaneously, allowing an entire team of remote workers to stay connected. And if you’re on the move, you’ll enjoy a more secure connection with the Nighthawk than public Wi-Fi.

Beyond its uses for remote work around the world, the Nighthawk M6 Pro could even replace a standard internet connection at your home or office. Because it can function with both a wired and wireless connection, you won’t lose connectivity due to internet or electricity outages. And with 13 hours of battery life, you’ll have time to wait for the outage to end. That said, increased battery life would be ideal, especially for remote workers and travelers. But whether you’re in a home office or off the grid, it’s hard to beat this product’s speed.

The Details: 13-hour battery life | 32 devices | Wi-Fi 6E connectivity | 4.1 x 4.14 x 0.85 inches | 0.56 pounds

Most Versatile

GlocalMe Numen Air 5G

Amazon GlocalMe Numen Air 5G

Amazon

The GlocalMe Numer Air 5G works in more than 140 countries on more than 100 operator networks — that means you’ll be covered just about anywhere. It doesn’t need a SIM card to work, thanks to its CloudSIM technology. Upon purchase, you’ll automatically receive 1GB of global data for a 90-day period, and additional data can be added easily via the mobile app. There are thousands of flexible data plans from which to choose, including pay-as-you-go options with no contract. In other words, this is a convenient mobile hotspot to take with you while you travel, since it’s designed to be useful in a wide variety of cellular settings and situations.

Stat-wise, we consider the 12-hour battery life to be good, but not especially impressive. That said, it may be plenty of time depending on how you intend to use the device. You can connect up to 16 devices, which is probably plenty for most users but may not be ideal for an office setup.

The Details: 12-hour battery life | 16 devices | 5G connectivity | 6.1 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches | 6.8 ounces

Best Value

RoamWiFi Portable WiFi Device

Amazon RoamWiFi R10 4G Portable WiFi Device

Amazon

This 4G LTE mobile hotspot router delivers a surprising amount of power and flexibility inside an affordable package. The device itself is priced under $200, and a variety of data plans are available at all price points, ranging from a $3 day pass to a $299 90-day pass. No SIM card is needed, and the device works in more than 160 countries (there’s a complete list about halfway down the Amazon product page). The whopping 18 hours of battery life outperforms every other battery-powered hotspot on our list.

That said, there are some limitations that come with the lower cost. The device does not connect to 5G networks, so internet speeds won’t necessarily be the fastest. Also, you can only connect five devices to this hotspot which is plenty for the average solo user, but may not be suitable for groups or families.

The Details: 18-hour battery life | 5 devices | 4G connectivity | ‎4.96 x 2.68 x 0.57 inches | 6.3 ounces

Best Unlocked

Netgear Nighthawk M1

Netgear Nighthawk MR1100 Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE Router

Amazon

Able to connect and share data with 20 devices at once, the Netgear Nighthawk M1 Mobile Hotspot can handle multiple tasks at once without sacrificing power or speed. It’s an unlocked device that uses GSM SIM cards, compatible with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and GoogleFi in the United States, and can serve as a backup internet connection while not traveling. It’s equipped with fast 4G LTE broadband and offers up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) of download speed. Worried about how much data you’ve used? Its LCD screen clearly displays how much data is remaining, calculates when it will run out, and keeps count of the devices connected.

While Netgear doesn’t publish the battery life of the Nighthawk M1, it claims it can last “all day” — and you can even buy a battery booster pack for more juice. There is an upgraded version of this hotspot that is 5G-compatible, but it’s nearly double the price. 5G connectivity may not be necessary for most travelers.

The Details: “All day” battery life | 20 devices | 4G connectivity | 4.15 x 4.15 x 0.8 inches | 8.5 ounces

Best Router

GL.iNet GL-MT3000 Wireless Travel Router

Amazon GL.iNet GL-MT3000 Pocket-Sized Wireless Travel Router

Amazon

Technically, a Wi-Fi router is not a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. But what it does do is allow you to take one internet connection with a tricky login situation — say, hotel Wi-Fi that asks you to input your room number every time you connect — and streamlines the process for connecting additional devices. In a nutshell, you connect to Wi-Fi via the router, which then creates a more secure network for you to connect to from other devices. This router can also boost Wi-Fi signals throughout a space, so if you’re in a vacation rental where the Wi-Fi is strong in one room but not another, a router can help.

This portable router is compatible with more than 30 VPN service providers and can accommodate up to 70 different devices, making it one of the best devices for securely accessing high-speed internet while traveling or on the move. The AdGuard feature helps to protect your devices from malware, phishing, ads, and online trackers. This is an especially important safety feature for using unfamiliar WiFi connections.

The Details: 70 devices | Wi-Fi 6 connectivity | 4.53 x 3.15 x 1.18 inches | 6.9 ounces

Tips for Buying a Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot

Consider where and when you’ll use it

Not all portable Wi-Fi hotspots can be used everywhere. If yours is tied to a U.S.–based carrier (like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon), and you’re planning on going abroad, you need to make sure you’ve paid for a data plan that includes international use. If you’re only traveling for a short period of time, this might be the most convenient option.

But if you’re planning on traveling internationally for an extended period of time, you might want to opt for an unlocked portable Wi-Fi hotspot — that is, one that isn’t tied to a specific carrier. You can then buy a data plan from a company based in your destination, which usually is a more economical decision. “SIM cards are cheap and easy to get in lots of countries worldwide, and going this route ensures you get the strongest signal possible for the lowest price,” Peter Holslin, senior staff writer at internet comparison site HighSpeedInternet.com, told T+L.

The duration of your trip should also inform whether you want to purchase an as-you-go data plan (better for shorter tips) or a monthly one (better for longer trips).

Check with your phone carrier

“When you use a portable hotspot, you can choose the carrier it’s connected to. So if you want to maximize your coverage, you can use one carrier for your phone and a different carrier for the hotspot,” Walker said. It’s often cheaper to buy a Wi-Fi hotspot to hook up to a local network while traveling versus paying for an international phone plan with your current carrier as well.

Think about voltage and battery life

For the most part, portable Wi-Fi hotspots use a relatively low amounts of power (about five to seven volts, depending on the size and strength of the device). However, you should still utilize a power converter when plugging your hotspot in during international travels. Not all outlets around the world support the same power output, so using an adapter can prevent blowing a fuse or sparking your devices. If you want a more portable Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn’t need to be plugged in, be sure to check its expected battery life to know exactly how long you can use it on the go.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do portable Wi-Fi hotspots work?

“Wi-Fi hotspots work similar to phones, tapping into your cellular network to provide high-speed data for use with laptops, tablets, gaming systems, etc.,” Verizon spokesperson George Koroneos told T+L. “What’s more? You can give access to your travel companions, so they can use your dedicated hotspot, similar to a Wi-Fi network.”

  • Does a portable Wi-Fi hotspot use data?

Yes, it does. “Mobile hotspots connect to cellular networks to provide internet connection allowing customers to connect anywhere,” Jeff Howard, AT&T’s vice president of hardware and partner solutions, told T+L.

  • How do I connect a portable Wi-Fi hotspot in a different country?

It depends on what type of portable hotspot you have and what type of plan you have. If your hotspot plan is locked to a specific carrier, you’ll need to make sure your carrier has an international plan. (Spoiler alert: most do.) It might be as simple as turning your device on and letting it automatically connect to a local cell network. But if your portable hotspot requires a local SIM card to work, you’ll have to pick one up at the airport or at a store and insert it into your hotspot to connect to a local cell network.

  • Why should I use a portable Wi-Fi hotspot instead of my cell phone data plan?

Many cell phone providers have international plan options for travelers, and you can turn most smartphones into a mobile hotspot under that plan. Then you can connect devices to your cell phone for internet services. But that’s not always the best solution.

“One thing to consider is carriers may limit the hotspot data amount on your phone, so you may see slower speeds at a certain point,” Walker said. “You also don’t have to run your cell phone battery when you use a standalone hotspot.” On the other hand, portable Wi-Fi hotspots require their own data plans, which costs additional money.

National Geographic is back with its annual ranking of “Best of the World” destinations.

This year, Nat Geo has called out 20 awe-inspiring experiences around the globe to consider for 2024 travel.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, National Geographic editor-in-chief Nathan Lump said the “Best of the World” series showcases the “incredible diversity of what there is out there to do and see and experience.”

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC RANKS TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR NEW ‘WORTH A TRIP’ SERIES: HERE ARE THE TOP SPOTS IN THE US

“My hope is that everyone will find at least one thing in there that [makes them] say, ‘Gosh, I gotta go do that,’” he said.

“Travel is a good way for people to open their minds, eyes and hearts,” he added, “and it’s also a great way to give back to yourself.”

National Geographic’s “Best of the World” list is a decade-long tradition, according to Nathan Lump, the publication’s editor-in-chief.  (Sebastián Iturralde/Acacia Johnson/National Geographic/Jay Young, Adventures on the Gorge)

Below are National Geographic’s top 20 recommended adventures for 2024.

1. Go on a horseback safari in Kenya

Instead of the usual safari experience in a 4×4 vehicle, consider taking in the African landscape by horseback.

Horseback safaris are intended for travelers who are looking for more “engaging, sustainable” wildlife encounters, Nat Geo said.

This experience is available at locations such as the 32,000-acre Borana Conservancy, which houses thoroughbreds and former polo ponies who are comfortable with riders at any skill level.

2. Run an Olympic marathon in Paris

With the 2024 Olympics headed to Paris, France, this summer, travelers are encouraged to take the opportunity to run an Olympic marathon at the same time.

The race is the first of its kind in Olympic and Paralympic Games history, according to the marathon’s website.

3. Visit ski tour UNESCO sites in Georgia

In the mountainous republic of Georgia, skiing is a major way to get around, according to Nat Geo.

The European nation is home to scenic ranges such as Svaneti, which can lead skiers through panoramic views of Gvibari Pass or to medieval Ushguli villages.

4. Go bear watching in Katmai National Park

Right here in the U.S., travelers can check out one of the highest concentrations of brown bears at Katmai National Park in Alaska.

Tours along the Katmai coast take visitors away from the high-tourist areas, where they can see bears grazing on greens and fish, Nat Geo reported.

5. Hear legendary live music in Kyoto

Although Japan is filled with ancient historical sites, Kyoto comes alive at night through its music scene.

Nat Geo described the “loud and irreverent” vibes at venues like Jittoku and Field, where music of all genres, from jazz to punk, is played “into the night.”

“This is what happens in Japan when the mask comes off,” Kyoto guide Van Milton told Nat Geo.

6. Cruise an epic river in Colombia

Colombia’s river system is a large part of the country’s culture, as about 80% of the population lives in the river basin of Magdalena, according to Nat Geo.

A new cruise program from AmaWaterways – reportedly the first of its kind – is offering a seven-night Colombian river trip, stopping at colonial towns and for musical performances.

7. Cruise down Route 66 in New Mexico

“Get your kicks on Route 66” – or at least that’s what Nat Geo suggests for 2024.

A trip down the iconic road through New Mexico offers some major landmarks like motels, curio shops and the Petroglyph National Monument.

Eighteen miles of Route 66 run through through Albuquerque, which is currently receiving a “half-million-dollar glow-up” to its strip of vintage neon signs along Central Avenue, Nat Geo said.

8. Explore ancient art in Algeria

Algeria is home to Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, which is Africa’s largest national park.

It boasts one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ancient rock art, according to Nat Geo.

People from the Neolithic period carved 15,000 petroglyphs into these geologic formations with images of various animals, suggesting that what is now desert could have once been grassland intertwined with waterways.

9. Dive with sharks in Western Australia

Australia is known for its vast wildlife population, including the 300 to 500 whale sharks that inhabit Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef.

The sharks gather in one of the largest congregations in the world between March and July, according to Nat Geo, allowing visitors to safely view them while giving them space.

10. Hike a volcano in Panama

Since Panama’s recent launch of its “1,000 Kilometers of Trails” project, visitors are encouraged to trek the country’s trails as a means of driving up outdoor recreation and green tourism.

This includes the Ruta de la Caldera, a system of five trails surrounding the extinct Valle de Anton volcano. The trails feature “waterfall-speckled landscapes” and “spectacular views,” photographer Rose Marie Cromwell told Nat Geo.

11. Catch the eclipse at Niagara Falls

Looking for the perfect spot to view the total solar eclipse on April 8? Niagara Falls could be the place.

“Directly in the path of totality, Niagara Falls will offer views of a total solar eclipse, which won’t occur again in the contiguous U.S. until 2044,” Nat Geo said.

CALIFORNIA CLIMBER LEADS FIRST-KNOWN ASCENT OF ONE OF THE TALLEST SEA CLIFFS ON EARTH

Terrapin Point, Prospect Point and the Observation Tower on the U.S. side of the Falls offer prime views of the phenomena, according to the brand.

12. Trek a glacier in Chile

Soak in the stunning panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and glacial waterways while exploring the tips of the Exploradores Glacier in Chile’s Laguna San Rafael National Park.

There are over 17,300 glaciers found along Patagonia’s ice covers, Nat Geo reported.

13. Step back in time in Menorca

With this adventure, you can feel as if you’re an archaeologist uncovering ancient ruins in Menorca – the archipelago’s “greatest repository of ancient architecture,” Nat Geo said.

From well-preserved village centers to foundational blocks from before the Roman Empire, these ancient sites are easy to visit and explore.

ENDANGERED ZEBRA SHARKS TO BE RELEASED BACK INTO OCEANS IN FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL ‘RE-WILDING’ EFFORT

Some of the most striking features of Menorca are the navetas, which are megalithic tombs dating back to 1600 B.C., as well as the talayots, which are watchtowers built from mortarless blocks of limestone, according to Nat Geo.

14. Ride classic rails in Scotland

Explore the Scottish Highlands in style while aboard the Royal Scotsman.

Its interior reflects the surrounding landscape “through dark woods, wool tweeds and richly patterned bespoke tartans crafted by Scottish brand Araminta Campbell,” Nat Geo detailed.

HAWAII’S THREATENED SPECIES: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PROTECTED WILDLIFE ON THE ISLANDS

Guests will have the opportunity to make stops along the coast to tour castles and sample whiskey at well-respected distilleries, or they may choose to take advantage of the onboard spa.

15. Sample authentic flavor in Thailand

Experience dishes made by locals and try unique flavors, such as one of the region’s key ingredients called pla ra, a “fermented-fish seasoning that boosts umami flavor,” Nat Geo said.

16. Wander tea trails in Sri Lanka

The island nation of Sri Lanka is “one of the world’s top producers of tea leaves” after first being introduced to the bushes nearly 200 years ago by British colonists, Nat Geo reported.

Tea enthusiasts can hike along the Pekoe Trail and follow the tracks once walked by workers and horse-drawn carts that transported the tea leaves during the 19th century.

17. Go gallery hopping in São Paulo

When visiting Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, Nat Geo suggests exploring the numerous exhibitions and street murals that make the city a “paradise” for art lovers.

“The crowning jewel is the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), which is expanding to showcase more of its 11,000-plus artworks, from pre-Renaissance paintings to contemporary sculptures,” according to Nat Geo.

18. Raft the rapids in West Virginia

Nicknamed the “Beast of the East,” the rapids in West Virginia are worth the whitewater rafting trip, said Nat Geo, but they are reportedly not for the faint of heart.

The New River is one of the oldest rivers on Earth, believed to be upwards of 360 million years old, according to the publication.

“The river falls 750 feet in only 50 miles between sandstone cliffs [before it] eventually merges with the Gauley River,” Nat Geo said.

19. Go antiquing in Hudson Valley

Antique collectors could find their oasis at the various flea markets and boutiques that sell a variety of rare finds throughout the Hudson Valley, New York, area.

Nat Geo noted that the region’s various antique inventory, including “colonial furniture and rare books [or] mid-century modern decor,” can be found at locations like Antique Warehouse in Hudson and Sister Salvage in Catskill.

20. Sleep on the water in British Columbia

Explore the western coast of Vancouver Island while floating on the serene waters at the Tofino Wilderness Resort, owned by the Ahousaht First Nation.

The “floating lodge” was renovated from timber that had fallen on-site at the resort, Nat Geo reported.

“The Ahousaht share with guests their philosophy, hishuk ish tsawalk (‘everything is one’), celebrating the interconnectedness of people and nature in a land they’ve occupied for thousands of years,” Nat Geo said.

Dolly Parton has put Pigeon Forge on the National Geographic map. The music icon and her popular theme park have made the magazine’s annual Best of the World list.

The 2024 list released Jan. 30 includes exciting, meaningful, and one-of-a-kind travel experiences from around the world. The travel suggestions range from Paris and Niagara Falls to the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia and diving with sharks on Australia’s Coral Coast.

Parton and Dollywood made the cut because this year’s Best of the World edition goes beyond geographical locations. It also highlights hotels, restaurants, global travelers and travel products.

Dollywood is worth a trip to Pigeon Forge

National Geographic named Dolly Parton one of the travelers of the year because of her world travels and for bringing the world to Pigeon Forge through Dollywood and her resorts. HeartSong Lodge, Parton’s newest resort, was one of four hotels in North America included in the new “worth a trip” category.

“Well, we’re lucky to be in the part of the world that I believe is just absolutely the most perfect place that God has created, so we just look outside the window and those big, beautiful Smoky Mountains provide all the inspiration we could ever dream of finding,” Parton told the magazine.

National Geographic praised Parton for helping to make East Tennessee a popular vacation spot, helping kids explore the world through Imagination Library, her nonprofit that provides free books to children, and for her wildlife preservation efforts.

Dollywood partners with the American Eagle Foundation and features Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, the largest presentation of non-releasable bald eagles in North America.

What are the best places to visit in 2024?

The main Best of the World list showcases “travel’s power to transform us and our connections with one another,” according to the magazine. The top 20 travel experiences list is curated by National Geographic explorers, photographers, and editors.

After you enjoy Dollywood and HeartSong, here are the top 20 travel experiences National Geographic suggests for 2024:

  1. Horseback safari in Kenya
  2. Olympic Marathon in Paris, France
  3. Ski tour through UNESCO sites in Georgia

National Geographic announced their list of top travel destinations in “Best of the World 2024.”

National Geographic’s team of experts and editors around the globe makes the list each year.

FIRST ON FOX: National Geographic released its annual list of “Best of the World” travel destinations, this time with a twist.

The 2024 list arrived with a new addition. The “Worth A Trip” series features hotels, restaurants, cultural spots and wellness experiences around the globe.

Nathan Lump, National Geographic editor-in-chief, said the expansion of the “Best of the World” enhances the brand’s decade-long tradition.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC RELEASES ITS ‘PICTURES OF THE YEAR’: SEE SOME OF THE JAW-DROPPING SHOTS

“I have this real belief that sometimes you just need one great thing to get inspired to go somewhere,” he told Fox News Digital in an interview.

“The promise of a really incredible meal or a museum that’s going to knock your socks off … that was really the inspiration. Not full-on destinations, but very specific places and experiences that we think are really exciting and worth noting.”

Each selection was made by “tapping into” the knowledge of National Geographic’s global team of editors, photographers, videographers and other contributors, all of whom are on the lookout for new, trendy and exciting offerings for travelers at all times, Lump said.

FIVE US DESTINATIONS MADE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S ‘BEST OF THE WORLD’ TRAVEL LIST: ARE YOU SURPRISED?

Of the plethora of worldwide picks, 11 selections are found in the U.S.

“You don’t have to travel around the world to experience something extraordinary.”

“It’s always so important to me to be able to emphasize all the great stuff we have that’s closer to home,” Lump said.

“You don’t have to travel around the world to experience something extraordinary.”

With that in mind, here are Nat Geo’s 2024 picks for the most “Worth A Trip” stops in America.

Best hotels

Heart Song Lodge – Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Dolly Parton’s new lodge, located in Dollywood, has been designated one of Nat Geo’s best hotels.

The Smoky Mountain-based accommodation offers such amenities as in-room balconies and pink Jeep tours of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nat Geo reported.

Visitors also have access to free trolley rides from the hotel to Dollywood’s roller coasters and live music.

Hacienda at Armendaris – Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

New Mexico got a shoutout for its Hacienda at Armendaris Hotel, located at the Ted Turner Reserves in the Chihuahuan Desert of southwestern New Mexico.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL: 50 MUST-SEE LANDMARKS THAT TELL OUR NATIONAL STORY

The four-bedroom hacienda is set on the 360,000-acre Armendaris preserve, which is also home to conservation programs that help restore the populations of bighorn sheep, Bolson tortoises, aplomado falcon and other species, according to Nat Geo.

Under Canvas North Yellowstone-Paradise Valley – Livingston, Montana

Under Canvas is a “glamping” resort set in scenic Yellowstone National Park.

yellowstone under canvas resort

Under Canvas North Yellowstone features 50 “glamping” tents in Montana’s Paradise Valley, surrounded by the Absaroka and Gallatin Mountains. The seasonal resort is an hour’s drive from Yellowstone National Park. (Buffalo Media)

Montana’s Crazy and Absaroka Mountains surround the resort, which is set in a valley that touches 50 riverfront acres at Yellowstone’s less crowded north entrance.

“These tented accommodations are quite luxurious and very comfortable,” Lump told Fox News Digital. “So you’re not roughing it … [but it] really brings you close to nature.”

ROCKY MOUNTAIN WEST WILDLIFE: HOW TO SAFELY SEE BEAR, MOOSE, BISON AND OTHER YELLOWSTONE SPECIES

The Under Canvas tents can fit two to seven people, according to Nat Geo. Additional hiking and horseback riding outings in neighboring regions are available for booking.

Rosewood Kona Village – Big Island, Hawaii

Rosewood Kona Village is making a comeback after a 2011 tsunami devastated the original resort, Nat Geo reported.

HAWAII’S THREATENED SPECIES: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PROTECTED WILDLIFE ON THE ISLANDS

“People were really quite devastated when the resort was destroyed because it was so popular. It was a beloved place where people had gone for generations,” Lump said.

During the restoration, the property was rebuilt on Big Island’s east coast, where families can learn to paddle outrigger canoes, make leis, watch movies under the stars and attend luau ceremonies.

Best cultural gems

Folger Shakespeare Library – Washington, D.C.

The world’s largest collection of “Shakespeareana” is officially reopening this year as a newly renovated and expanded museum and library.

The Folger, located on Capitol Hill, has more First Folios of William Shakespeare’s work than any other global destination, as well as an Elizabethan-style stage.

The library also features an interactive exhibit and a garden scattered with plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s works, such as rosemary and lavender.

National WWII Museum – New Orleans, Louisiana

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans has added its new Liberation Pavilion, which is focused on the “somber costs and global developments that were the result of the war,” according to Nat Geo.

National WWII Museum new orleans

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans encompasses several buildings — including the Campaigns of Courage pavilion, shown here — each covering different aspects of the war. The latest opening was the Liberation Pavilion, focusing on the last years of the conflict. (National WWII Museum)

The museum includes a recreation of Anne Frank’s secret annex in Amsterdam and a salt mine where treasured works of art hidden by the Nazis were uncovered.

Best wellness spots

Wellness might seem like a surprising addition to a list of this kind, Lump said, but the category is of great interest in today’s culture.

“Travel is a good way for people to open minds, open eyes and open hearts, and it’s also a great way to give back to yourself.”

“We all want to live better lives, live healthier and be more mindful, and travel is a really great way to think about that or experience something that might help you improve your life,” he said.

“I think that’s been a very important trend in consumer preferences and habits as well as the travel industry.”

“Wellness experiences” is one of four categories in Nat Geo’s “Best of the World 2024: Worth A Trip” list. (iStock)

Kosa Spa – Madison, Wisconsin

Kosa Spa, located in Madison’s historic Garver Feed Mill, offers its signature abhyanga full-body massage, which uses two bowls of “fragrant, warmed oil from Kosa’s own line of skin care products,” according to Nat Geo.

The spa serves post-treatment food and detoxifying tea as part of the 5,000-year-old Indian wellness tradition of Ayurveda.

QC NY Spa – Governors Island, New York City

Governors Island’s QC NY Spa offers relaxation right outside the concrete jungle.

The wellness center features indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and steam baths with views of the New York City skyline.

The day spa, carved out of 1930s Army barracks, according to Nat Geo, is accessible by ferry from Manhattan, since the island is car-free.

“I think it’s a wonderful, different kind of way to experience New York City and to bring a little bit of zen to your day in what can often be a busy and hectic place,” Lump said.

NEED A ‘WINTER RESET’? EXPERTS SHARE BENEFITS OF SLOWING DOWN DURING COLDER MONTHS

“It’s not necessarily the kind of thing people would always think of when they think of their trip to New York,” he added.

Best restaurants

“Food is such an incredible motivator,” said Lump. “And people do plan entire trips around getting a hard-to-get restaurant reservation, or a place they may have seen or heard about.”

Okta – Willamette Valley, Oregon

Okta is the newest restaurant by two-star Michelin chef Matthew Lightner, who opened the eatery inside the Tributary Hotel in historic downtown McMinnville.

The chef explores Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine country in his dishes, which feature locally foraged ingredients, regional fish and game, and produce grown on Okta’s 70-acre farm, Nat Geo noted.

Carriqui – San Antonio, Texas

Barbecue is in focus at San Antonio’s riverside Pearl District restaurant, Carriqui.

The restaurant has been built into an 1890s wooden saloon, which was rehabbed, expanded and moved 500 yards to serve South Texans their local cuisine.

The menu showcases Tex-Mex-style options, from cauliflower in mole sauce to kolaches filled with barbecue brisket.

Market 57 – New York City

Pier 57’s new food hall, Market 57, has been built inside a converted 1954 historic dock house on the west side of Manhattan.

The space features food from 15 minority- and women-owned vendors that embody the city’s “global food culture,” Nat Geo said, with one rotating chef or restaurant that swaps out every six months.

Pier 57 also has an expansive roof deck with a two-acre park and views overlooking the Hudson River.

“We always want to remind people of how many great, exciting, new and unexpected things there are out there to discover,” Lump told Fox News Digital.

In 2022, the total contribution of travel and tourism to the global gross domestic product (GDP) was 23 percent lower than in 2019, the year prior to the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, the contribution of travel and tourism to the global GDP amounted to 7.7 trillion U.S. dollars in 2022. This figure was forecast to reach an estimated 9.5 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023, remaining five percent below pre-pandemic levels.

Which countries record the highest travel and tourism contribution to GDP?

GDP is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year. It is considered an important indicator of a country’s economic strength, and a positive change in GDP is a sign of economic growth. In 2022, the United States and China were by far the leading travel markets based on the total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP. That year, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan followed in the ranking.

What are the most visited countries in the world?
