Turning point for Toffees
Matchweek 25 of the Premier League season concludes on Monday night with Everton looking for a win over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park that would lift them out of the bottom three.
It promises to be a tight affair but the Toffees may feel more confident of taking the points, having beaten Palace in the reverse fixture in November and knocked them out of the FA Cup last month.
They have gone seven league games without a win but that has been a tough run of fixtures, with Manchester City (twice), Aston Villa and Spurs (twice) among their opponents, and tonight they face a side in the bottom half for only the third time since late December.
They have drawn both home league matches in this calendar year – 0-0 with Aston Villa and 2-2 with Spurs – and have a record of seven wins and two draws from their last nine home games with Palace.
The Eagles were reportedly set to sack manager Roy Hodsgon on Thursday before the 76-year-old was taken ill. They have lost their last four matches on the road and, while we think they have enough firepower to score, our selection is for Everton to take the points.
Everton vs Crystal Palace tip 1: Everton to win and both teams to score @ 3/1 with Sky Bet
Case for the defences looks shaky
Each of Palace’s previous four away league games has produced three or more goals but the Eagles have conceded 13 times in that run.
Meanwhile, two of Everton’s last three home league games have produced four goals – the 3-1 loss against Manchester City and the 2-2 draw with Spurs.
In addition, in three of the previous four meetings between the sides at Goodison at least three goals have been scored, with the hosts coming out on top each time. Given the issues both sides have had at the back this season, over 2.5 goals looks a good bet.
Everton vs Crystal Palace tip 2: Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10 with Sky Bet
Scrap in store on Merseyside
The reverse fixture in November featured 27 fouls and five yellow cards, and tonight’s match should be no less keenly contested.
Everton midfielder James Garner was one of four Everton players booked that day. The 22-year-old has already picked up five yellows this season and a sixth is the first leg of our bet builder.
Palace’s Jefferson Lerma is also likely to be in the thick of the action. The Colombian has committed 33 fouls this season, behind only Jordan Ayew in the Palace squad.
There were also 21 shots in November’s meeting and this figure could be beaten on Monday, with winger Jack Harrison potentially playing a key part in the result.
The Englishman has the second-highest shots-on-target percentage (36.4pc) of Everton players who have taken 10 or more shots – behind only Abdoulaye Doucoure (51.7pc) – and he is likely to try his luck given the chance on Monday.
Everton vs Crystal Palace tip 3: Bet builder: James Garner to be carded, Jefferson Lerma to commit 1+ foul and Jack Harrison to have 1+ shot on target @ 9/1 with Sky Bet
