MITCHELL — With the Class A and Class B girls basketball postseason set to tip off this week, this week marks the final edition of the poll for both those classes this season.
Flandreau held firm atop Class A, while Centerville grabbed the No. 1 spot in Class B in the final week. Elsewhere, Howard entered the Class B boys rankings for the first time.
Here are this week’s polls and a breakdown of the most recent changes.
The South Dakota Prep Media basketball polls for the week of Feb. 19, 2024, are listed below, ranking the top-five teams in each class. First-place votes are indicated in parentheses and teams are ranked by total points received.
Note: This week marks the final polls for the Class A and Class B girls, as their postseason starts Monday night. There will be one more week of polls for the other four classes.
1. Mitchell (18), 17-1, 90; 2. Harrisburg, 14-3, 70; 3. Brandon Valley, 14-3, 56; 4. Sioux Falls Washington, 11-7, 26; 5. Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 12-6, 14.
Others receiving votes: Rapid City Stevens 10, Watertown 4.
Revolving door: Outside of the Class AA boys top three, a 30-point gap has opened up. Sioux Falls Roosevelt is the latest team to fall into the chaos, dropping two games to fall from No. 4 with a 36-point cushion to the No. 5 spot (14 vote points), behind Sioux Falls Washington (26), which traded places at No. 4. Rapid City Stevens, which landed just outside the top five, received 10 vote points this week, the most of any Class AA team outside the rankings since Dec. 11.
1. Sioux Falls Christian (18), 18-0, 90; 2. Hamlin, 17-3, 69; 3. Pine Ridge, 18-1, 51; 4. Dakota Valley, 16-2, 37; 5. Sioux Valley, 18-2, 20.
Others receiving votes: Rapid City Christian 2, Hot Springs 1.
Standing steady: Though this week marks the sixth straight poll featuring the same group of five teams in the Class A boys rankings, the top five maintained its order from the past week for the first time this season. Only eight total vote points changed hands this week, no more than two points difference for a single team.
1. Castlewood (9), 17-3, 80; 2. White River (8), 17-2, 77; 3. De Smet (1), 17-3, 53; 4. Wessington Springs, 18-1, 30; 5. Howard, 17-3, 15.
Others receiving votes: Leola/Frederick Area 10, Viborg-Hurley 4, Dell Rapids St. Mary 1.
Howard hops in: After spending five weeks, including the past three in a row, receiving votes, Howard cracked the Class B boys top-five for the first time this season. The Tigers check in at No. 5, as Viborg-Hurley fell out of the top five for the first time this season following four losses in its past seven games (including a 54-53 loss to Howard on Feb. 15). Last week’s top four of Castlewood, White River, De Smet and Wessington Springs went unchanged, though the gap between No. 1 and No. 2 is down to three vote points.
1. O’Gorman (18), 18-0, 90; 2. Mitchell, 17-1, 67; 3. Brandon Valley, 14-3, 58; 4. Sioux Falls Jefferson, 14-4, 35; 5. Pierre, 12-6, 12.
Others receiving votes: Spearfish 5, Harrisburg 3.
Govs get back: For the first time since the preseason poll, defending state runner-up Pierre is back in the Class AA girls top-five. The Governors, which have received votes in all but one poll this season, had spent each of the past two polls as the lone team receiving votes outside of the top five. Making way for the Govs, Harrisburg, which had been ranked in every edition of the poll, fell out. Spearfish also received votes for the first time. Mitchell remained at No. 2 despite its first loss of the season last week.
1. Flandreau (16), 20-0, 87; 2. Mahpiya Luta (Red Cloud) (2), 19-0, 65; 3. Sioux Falls Christian, 17-2, 53; 4. Sisseton, 18-1, 36; 5. Tea Area, 16-4, 19.
Others receiving votes: Wagner 6, Vermillion 3, Belle Fourche 1.
Unbeatens up top: The final Class A girls poll features the same top five as the past two weeks, with Flandreau and Mahpiya Luta (Red Cloud) leading the way at a combined 39-0. However, the final poll doesn’t match up with the final seed points standings, which are topped by Sisseton and Sioux Falls Christian, with Flandreau at No. 3 and Mahpiya Luta at No. 6. Wagner and Vermillion, which ended outside the poll’s top five receiving votes, are No. 4 and No. 5 in the seed points standings, while fifth-ranked Tea Area is seventh in seed points. Belle Fourche received its first vote of the season in the final poll.
Class B
1. Centerville (11), 18-2, 81; 2. Ethan (7), 18-2, 73; 3. Harding County, 19-0, 49; 4. Arlington, 18-2, 34; 5. Wall, 16-4, 17.
Others receiving votes: Lyman 14, Freeman 1, Warner 1.
Tornado takeover: Centerville unseated Ethan to reclaim the No. 1 Class B girls ranking in the final poll of the season. Prior to the Rustlers’ five-week run atop the poll, the Tornadoes held the No. 1 spot for two weeks in January. In the final Class B seed-point standings, Centerville and Ethan are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, as fourth-ranked Arlington grabbed the top slot and third-ranked Harding County, the lone remaining unbeaten team in the class, is the No. 2 seed. Wall checks in at No. 5 in both the poll and seed-point standings.
