Saturday horse racing betting tips: Best picks for Ascot and Haydock (Feb 17)

Top Tipster and Broadcaster, Ed ‘Longshot Ted’ Quigley has been firing in the winners lately, including 12/1 and 4/1 winners from his last two tips. Ed pays attention to Ascot and Haydock on what should be a thrilling afternoon of Grade 1 action on Saturday…

Ted’s bets for Saturday, February 17:

Find the following picks for the Saturday races at Ascot and Haydock. Play on the races with our best expert-rated horse racing betting sites:

  • Ascot 1.50 – Apple Away – bet with bet365
  • Ascot 2.25 – Bad each way – bet with talkSPORT BET
  • Ascot 3.00 – Do Your Job each way – bet with talkSPORT BET
  • Haydock 3.15 – Iron Bridge  – bet with BetMGM

Ascot 1.50 – Apple Away

This looks a golden opportunity for the Lucinda Russell trained Mare APPLE AWAY to land Grade 2 honours over fences. In receipt of weight from her four rivals, she looks to be the one to beat on ratings, and this former Grade 1 winning Novice Hurdler has a touch of class which should allow her to see off the opposition.

A winner of one of her three starts over the larger obstacles, she has bumped into the classy Grey Dawning on a couple of occasions, and that is solid form given that Dan Skelton’s horse will head to the Cheltenham Festival in just over three weeks time with solid each-way claims.

Ascot 2.25 – Bad each way

Ben Pauling has his string in fine fettle, and he can enhance his recent hot-streak with the 5-year-old, BAD. The gelding has been hitting the crossbar in recent times, including when runner-up at this venue just before Christmas. Subsequently, he has undergone a wind-operation, and he moves up in trip to 2m3f with the application of cheek pieces for the first time.

If they have the desired effect then Bad wouldn’t need to be finding much improvement off a mark of 122 to be playing a serious part here. He looks versatile in regards to underfoot requirements, and should be in the shake-up once again from an each-way perspective with the excellent Ben Jones taking the ride.

Ascot 3.00 – Do Your Job each way

DO YOUR JOB has joined the Charlie Longsdon team, and although the 10-year-old has entered the Veteran stage of his career, he is thoroughly unexposed over this trip, and in recent times has shaped like more and more of a stayer. We saw that at Wetherby last time out where he cashed in off a reduced mark, but it was more the case that stamina won him the day when staying on strongly over an extended 2m3f to get up on the line.

Off 135 he still looks well treated on old form, and if he were to get involved in the business end of proceedings it wouldn’t be a big surprise. Lily Pinchin takes the ride and looks the each-way angle here upped to 3m.

Haydock 3.15 – Iron Bridge

This will be a proper war of attrition, and it can go the way of Welsh Grand National runner-up IRON BRIDGE. The 8-year-old is an out and out stayer who loves the mud, and off a mark of 140 could take all the beating here. Underfoot conditions are going to be hard work, and that is when the Jonjo O’Neill trained representative can be seen to best effect.

There are quite a few exposed sorts in this line up, whereas Iron Bridge brings a rather lightly-raced portfolio to the table. Jonjo Jnr will be doing the steering, and this combination can prove tough to beat.
