There are just three meetings on Tuesday, with a double-bill of National Hunt fixtures preceding an all-weather Flat card.

The tapes rise first at Taunton (2.10-4.45pm) before they’re off at Market Rasen (2.25-5.05) and the day’s action is completed with action on the Tapeta at Newcastle (4.55-8.30).

Among our Tuesday fancies is a Phillip Hobbs runner who could have plenty of improvement in him when he makes his handicap debut at Taunton.

Horse racing tips: Taunton 3.40

Paul Nicholls saddles Inca De Lafayette in this competitive Class 3 handicap hurdle over an extended two miles. A winner last time out, the six-year-old is likely to be a popular selection with punters but he can be inconsistent, as was evident when he pulled up on his penultimate start at Huntingdon.

Preference goes to INTO THE PARK, trained by Philip Hobbs. The five-year-old has only had three starts over hurdles to date but managed to get off the mark in eye-catching fashion at Newbury last time out. He was noticeably keen in the early stages but clearly possesses an engine and had plenty of fuel left in the tank at the business end of the race.

Michael Nolan eased him down in the final 100 yards and he still managed to score by eight lengths. He is entitled to continue improving and the switch to handicaps can facilitate further progress.

His third-placed finish behind Epatante’s half-sister over course and distance on his previous start suggests there was no fluke about that subsequent performance at Newbury and 120 looks to be a reasonable opening mark. A big run is expected as there should be plenty more to come.

Selection: Into The Park @ SP with BetMGM

Horse racing tips: Newcastle 6.30

SOLRAY is bidding to win for the third time for trainer and part-owner Jane Chapple-Hyam, who significantly makes a 520-mile round trip from her Dalham base for this six-furlong sprint.

The lightly raced son of New Bay finished second and third in two starts on turf but switching to the all-weather and Newcastle in particular has facilitated plenty of improvement.

He got off the mark in impressive fashion over course and distance in September, pulling clear to win a novice event by four lengths. Having been held up in the early stages of the race, he improved his position to lead before the furlong pole and the result never looked in doubt.

The colt got off to a slow start on his handicap debut next time but kept on well and wasn’t beaten far despite finishing fifth. He had no such issues last time out and was a comfortable winner here at Newcastle once again.

The handicapper has responded with a 7lb rise for his latest win but he looks capable of continuing on his current upward trajectory.

Selection: Solray @ SP with BetMGM

Horse racing tips: Market Rasen 3.55

Noel Williams’ ROYALE DANCE returned to winning ways on just her second start for the yard last time out at Leicester and that victory should be a massive confidence boost for the mare.

The daughter of Muhtathir travelled like a dream and the race was over before the second-last flight. She pulled clear to win by more than eight lengths and the handicapper has responded by allotting her a reasonable 6lb rise in the weights.

It’s fair to say that the extra weight wouldn’t have stopped her that day and if reproducing a similar effort here, she should be bang in the mix once again.

Her cosy victory at Hexham on her hurdling debut in November 2022 for her previous connections suggested that she had plenty of potential and although she hasn’t quite lived up to that, winning more races in this sort of grade should be no problem at all.

Selection: Royale Dance @ SP with BetMGM

TOP STORYLINES: MITTY VS. PINEWOOD, AGAIN

Pinewood has reached the Central Coast Section Open Division girls basketball final an unprecedented nine consecutive times. Not even Archbishop Mitty has done that.

But the Panthers’ path to 10 in a row has never been more daunting.

Seeded fourth, Pinewood will have to win at top-seeded Mitty on Wednesday night to capture Pool A and advance to the final Friday at Santa Clara University.

Mitty is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country. It has blown out all comers since facing elite national competition during the holiday tournament season.

The Monarchs are a heavy favorite on Wednesday, even if UConn-bound Morgan Cheli continues to sit out because of an undisclosed injury.

But let’s make one thing clear. Pinewood is never intimidated to play Mitty. The Los Altos Hills school led by longtime coach Doc Scheppler has beaten an undefeated, national No. 1 Mitty before. In triple overtime, for the NorCal Open Division championship, six years ago.

Pinewood also knocked off Mitty for the CCS Open crown during the spring pandemic season in 2021.

Mitty has won the past two games between the teams, both for the CCS Open title.

Pinewood had hoped for another shot at Mitty in the final. But as the No. 4 seed, the Panthers ended up in the same pool as Mitty. Asked Wednesday about playing the Monarchs again, Scheppler said in a text, “One game before we wanted but we’re up for the challenge.”

SURPRISES

Whereas Pool A has unfolded predictably, Pool B on the girls side has turned upside down.

On Monday, No. 6 St. Ignatius beat No. 2 Sacred Heart Cathedral 61-46 and No. 7 Los Gatos upset No. 3 Priory 44-40.

With the final round set for Wednesday, St. Ignatius is 2-0, SHC and Los Gatos are each 1-1 and Priory is 0-2.

SI will advance to the final with a victory at home over Los Gatos on Wednesday. If SI loses, it would still move on if SHC beats Priory. (SI wins a three-way tiebreaker between itself, Los Gatos and SHC).

If Los Gatos and Priory win, Los Gatos would win a two-way tiebreaker with SI because of the head-to-head result.

GAME DETAILS

Open Division boys

No. 1 Archbishop Riordan 62, No. 5 Sacred Heart Prep 45: Behind 17 points from Zion Sensley and 13 from Andrew Young, Riordan improved to 2-0 in Pool A with a victory on the road over Sacred Heart Prep. TJ OBrien had 18 points for SHP. The game was played at SHP as Riordan served out the final game of a penalty for its part in a fight against Inderkum-Sacramento during a NorCal regional last season. Riordan will be back at home on Wednesday to play Serra for a spot in Friday’s final.

No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 73, No. 6 Branham 56: Mitty is one step closer to playing for its sixth CCS Open Division title after turning back visiting Branham in the second round of pool play on Monday. Gavin Ripp scored 19 points and Nathan d’Abreu Noronha added 18 to lead the Monarchs. Mitty also got 11 points each from Tyler Jones and Caeden Hutcherson. The Monarchs (20-6) and third-seeded St. Ignatius are 2-0 in Pool B. They will meet on Wednesday at Mitty for a spot in the final on Friday at Santa Clara University. Branham fell to 0-2 in pool play. On Monday, the Bruins got 21 points from Dasan Poston and 11 from Ben Lim. Branham (22-4) will close out pool play on Wednesday at home against Half Moon Bay before moving on to NorCals next week.

Open Division girls

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 86, No. 5 Archbishop Riordan 28: Another game, another massive blowout for powerhouse Mitty, which is a victory on Wednesday over South Bay rival Pinewood from playing for the Open Division championship on Friday at Santa Clara University. Mitty was again without injured UConn-bound star Morgan Cheli. Once again, the Monarchs had no trouble on the court. McKenna Woliczko scored 23 points, Elana Weisman had 13 points and Belle Bramer finished with 10 points as Mitty improved to 26-0. Ashanti Dias scored 12 points for Riordan, which fell to 15-10 overall and 0-2 in Pool A. The Crusaders play host to St. Francis on Wednesday in the final round of pool play.

No one can question Kansas State basketball’s resilience.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, it once again was too little, too late.

The Wildcats cut a 12-point deficit to four in the final three-plus minutes, but again came up short on the road as they dropped a 62-56 decision to Texas on Monday night in Big 12 Conference play at Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

The loss, their third straight and seventh in the last eight games, dropped the Wildcats to 15-11 overall and 5-8 in the Big 12. Texas improved to 17-9 with a 6-7 league record.

The Wildcats trailed 54-42 with 3:21 left, when Dai Dai Ames was ejected for a flagrant foul on Texas’ Kadin Shedrick. But two Cam Carter free throws with 50.3 seconds left trimmed it to 56-52 before the Longhorns closed it out.

For K-State, Arthur Kaluma led the way with 15 points, followed by Tylor Perry with 13 and David N’Guessan with 12. Kaluma and N’Guessan each had seven rebounds.

For Texas, Dylan Disu led all scorers with 20 points.

Here are three takeaways from the Wildcats’ final Big 12 regular-season game against Texas.

Arthur Kaluma comes to life

After missing seven of his first eight shots, and going 2-for-10 in the first half, Kaluma after intermission, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers — one of them a four-point play, to keep the Wildcats in it.

Kaluma was 4 of 16 from the floor, but hit all five of his free throws and also had seven rebounds.

Related: Kansas State basketball coach Jerome Tang’s message remains the same in good times and bad

K-State changes it up defensively

K-State coach Jerome Tang tried a little of everything defensively to slow down Texas in the first half, giving the Longhorns a variety of zone looks, including a triangle-and-two, on Max Abmas and Dylan Disu.

It worked relatively well as the Longhorns shot 32.3% on the way to a 27-22 halftime advantage.

The Wildcats returned to their signature man-to-man in the second period.

Wildcats’ 3-point woes continue in first half

After going 1-for-15 from 3-point range in Saturday’s loss to TCU, things did not improve in the first half against Texas as the Wildcats were 1 of 10 at the break. Things improved in the second half, but they still finished at just 5-for-19.

Perry, who was shut out behind the arc for the first time all season in the TCU game, had the Wildcats’ only first-half make and hit two more to start the second period. But before Arthur Kaluma finally connected withg 6:36, the rest of the team was 0-for-9.

Kaluma knocked down another one with 2:41 to go and was fouled for a four-point play.

KERKHOVEN — For the second time this season, Minneota used a big second half to thwart Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

This time, the Vikings did it in the Camden Conference girls basketball championship game.

Tied 31-all at halftime, Minneota outscored KMS 44-29 in the second half en route to a 75-60 victory Monday night.

The Vikings were the South Division champs while the Fighting Saints were the winners of the North Division.

“We got into a little bit of foul trouble in the first half and the same thing happened when we were here earlier in the year but we were down 10 at halftime,” said Vikings head coach Al Panka. Minneota beat KMS 61-53 on Jan. 16 in Kerkhoven. Minneota is ranked 12th in Class A by the Minnesota Basketball News.

Panka added, “We got to half and it was tied, I was like ‘I’m not extremely happy but I’m a lot happier than the last time we were here. In the locker room, we said we gotta clean this up, clean that up and the kids came out and did that.”

Providing the biggest spark for the Vikings in the second half was Dakoda Hennen. She scored 11 of her 15 points after halftime. Seven of those points came in the first four minutes of the half. The Vikings went on a 23-6 run to go up 54-37 with 10 minutes, 27 seconds left to play.

Dakoda’s second-half run paired nicely with the post play of Kenadi Arndt. Arndt scored a game-high 25 points.

“Dakota, Kenadi and Faith (Myhre with 14 points) were our leading scorers and most nights, it’s Kiersyn (Hulzebos) and Grace (Hennen),” Panka said. “We’ve had that luxury all year that most nights at least three of them are in double figures. Tonight, it was those three’s turn.”

With 9:15 left to play, KMS sophomore Acelynn Hacker surpassed 1,000 career points with a contested jumper in the lane. Needing 12 to reach the mark before the game, Hacker finished with 15 points.

That kicked off an 18-6 run for the Fighting Saints that cut Minneota’s lead to six. But that is as close as KMS got the rest of the way.

Emily Wagner finished with a KMS-best 18 points and three steals. Mamie Luft tacked on six points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

“Emily played a great second half (with 13 points),” said Fighting Saints head coach Justin Johnson. “She got some huge breakaways and hit some big threes for us.”

KMS has its regular-season finale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. The Fighting Saints are also the three seed in the Section 3AA-North tournament and begin the postseason at 7 p.m. Saturday against sixth-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins at Kerkhoven.

“It’s good to be tested right before playoffs,” Johnson said.
